Terror is not blind. It chooses its victims carefully
Massacre in the Beit Yisrael neighborhood in Jerusalem: two babies and five children
among the dead. Grandmother Hannah buries eight members of her family
On Saturday night, March 2,2002, a suicide bomber chose to blow himself
up among a group of people who had celebrated the bar mitzvah of
Naveh Hazani and the bar mitzvah of Almog Hajbi. Among the intended
victims were many children and babies, whom the terrorist certainly saw
from very close range.
The explosion was horrifying. Nine bodies were scattered on the ground,
seven of them members of the same extended family, the Ilan and Nehmad
families from Rishon Letzion. The next day, Grandmother Hannah buried
seven members of her family–one after the other.
three and a helf months later, auother grandson, Eliyahu, died of his injuries.

Avraham Ya'akov Eliyahu, 5 months old,
died in the arms of
his mother Ya’arit-Zofiya, who was also killed in the blast.

Oriah Ilan, one year old,
was in her stroller when the explosion
occurred. A piece of metal pierced the artery in her neck and she died
instantly.
Her brother Lidor, 10,
who was standing nearby, was also killed on the spot. Lidor studied at the Ziv-Kramim school in Rishon
Letzion, where he excelled in his studies. He was a talented actor and
paticipated in his school`s drama club.

Liran Nehmad, 2, and her sister shiraz 6,
were killed as they stood near their parents, Gafnit and Shlomi, who were also killed.

Shaul Nehmad, 15,
cousin of Oriah, Lidor, Liran and Shiraz – was
killed immediately. Shaul studied at the Or Gaon school in Bnei Brak.
He was an excellent student and dreamed of becoming a Torah scholar.
His brother, Eliyahu, was seriously injured, and died on june 19, 2002.
Among the seriously injured were two children living in the Beit Yisrael
neighborhood – Yehuda Markovitz, 12, and his nephew Menachem, 7.
Bat-El Hajbi, 14, a champion athlete from Rishon Letzion, was seriously
hurt in the attack. Bat-El, who won a medal at the last Maccabiah games
and dreamed of running in the Olympics, suffered severe leg wounds.
